2002 Will Be The Year Mazmania Hits The Charts!
After taking some time off to establish an online marketing agency, John Mazurkiewicz has vowed
to make this year the year the Mazmania Music Co. licenses a song that makes it to the charts.
"I don't know which songs are going to hit, but I will do everything in my power to get on the charts
this year," says Mazurkiewicz. Call it a Guardian Angel on his shoulder ("damn, Curtis Sliwa is heavy!")
or a bizarre confidence in the Hand of Fate, Mazurkiewicz is sure that this is Mazmania's year. "If all
goes well, we'll be 'wetting our beaks' in the months to come," he says. "Then, once one song breaks,
people will be busting our chops to give them licenses. We may eventually have to turn people away."
Letter Published In INTERACTIVE WEEK
There is a terrific cartoonist named John Kovalic whose work appears on a regular basis in.
Interactive Week magazine. In January, 2001, he had a great piece about how people buy all
sorts of gear, hard drives, burners, speakers, etc. to download and copy music from places
like Napster (which I personally hate with a passion), claiming that they are getting even with
"record industry swine" by stealing the music for free, and how contradictory it is that people are
willing to pay all that money to companies that support the viewing, downloading and copying of
copyrighted material, but they refuse to pay a penny to the creators of the work. My letter to the editor
supported John's work, and asked for more of the same. All of his work can be found en masse
at http://www.kovalic.com, and his "Napster" cartoon can be found at the following by clicking here.
Hit after hit after hit!
Thanks to everyone who has visited Mazmania Music Company on the internet. We are excited
and a bit overwhelmed by the response to our site thusfar. As a result, we are working hard to create
a more comprehensive site that takes our initial concept to an even higher level. Since launching
the site in mid-September, 1998, we have seen a tremendous amount of interest from visitors all
over the world, a great number of you from outside the U.S. We thank you, and look forward to
working with you in the future!
Letter Published In Yahoo Internet Life! July, 1999
After reading all about how great MP3 is for the music business, we just couldn't take it anymore.
We had to respond to the article, and the thrust of our reply centers on the fact that if you are
an artist, recording your own music and selling it in stores and at your gigs, MP3 could be a good
thing. However, if you are a songwriter and/or music publisher, and you are not out there making
money for performing, and you want to get paid for your creations, you are up the creek with a turd
for a paddle! Well, several people e-mailed Mazmania to agree with our assessment, but several
people just didn't get it. Not only were they rude and crass, they completely misunderstood the
point of the letter. It's not surprising. There are many sides to the issue. If we're all trying to make a
living, why should everyone else make money except the creator of the art? Why should I spend
$50,000 to record and replicate a CD, only to have people "rip" it off and send it around the world for
free? Where is the incentive for songwriters to create new songs? Where is the incentive for music
publishers to pitch and plug songs? The money that is derived from royalties helps artists to create
more art, to contribute more to our culture, leave something behind for their children. Wake up, the
Bustelo is brewing. The inmates may haveappeared to have taken over the asylum, but only a handful
of huge companies will benefit from MP3 or whatever it morphs into.
Silicon Alley Reporter Show On MP3
John Mazurkiewicz recently called in to an internet broadcast of the Silicon Alley Reporter
which featured a panel discussion about MP3 and its implications in the marketplace.
Defending the rights of songwriters and music publishers, Mazurkiewicz spoke on the
December 18th broadcast and complained that MP3 may be great for unsigned bands who
are looking for additional exposure to sell more concert tickets and merchandise, but it
sucks for songwriters and publishers who are trying to get paid for their creations. "It's ironic
that Diamond is trying to get money for their Rio MP3 player and others are trying to get money
for their shareware MP3 players that you can download over thenet, but they're telling songwriters
that our songs are worthless," says Mazurkiewicz. "Obviously, this MP3 crap is a major threat
to anyone trying to make a dollar for their songs. We can't just sit by and let them get away with this."
Mazmania Music Co. was featured in Billboard!
Our thanks go out to Irv Lichtman, who told the music world about Mazmania Music's attempts
to reach out and touch the people with our songs. His highly influential "Words & Music"column
gave us a big shot in the arm. Our web site traffic shotup like a rocket! People are coming and
checking out our site, and we love it! (His mention of us was in the Oct. 10, 1998 issue, page 46.)
NewsRadio 88 Covers Mazmania at Internet World convention!
While multi-million dollar companies were showing off their latest wares at the humongous Internet World
convention at the Jacob Javits Center, reps from Mazmania were seeking out media people to write
about the unique idea Mazmania has for pitching songson the Internet. WCBS Reporter Paul Goldstein
interviewed John Mazurkiewicz and wrote a story and uploaded it to their site before the show was over!
www.newsradio88.com featured the piece in their "Top Stories" page and our thanks go out to Paul
and the top-notch team at WCBS Newsradio 88. You know, when it comes to news,
traffic and weather, nobody does it better!
Here are some of the things that will be posted on the site in the near future:
Joe's children's music project (known as "Funjammin")
